Best Movement
,People ask me what is the best movement for their body and I usually answer “it depends on your goals”. However, my general rule is that if you like the way you move and that brings you joy, then go for it. That is the best movement! In my case, I don’t like getting on treadmills or care to be in competitive runs. I do like to dance, walk, sometimes jog and bike, especially when the weather is hot. I prefer to use movement for a purpose, like avoid using the car and polluting the Earth. So I decided to go on a grocery trip using my bike. 84F, 5mi trip, not having bike lanes available for the entire route – all good with me. My strategy was simple: take a bottle of water, a backpack and $$ for groceries and find the safest and quickest route to get there. I also had faith that nobody would steal my bicycle while I was inside the store- really…an 18 year old bike from K-mart, who would take that? In the end I got some cardio done. I also got all the groceries I could fit in my insulated string bag, and came home with a sense of achievement and efficiency.
What is one kind of movement you would like to engage in more often? How about something you would like to do with your spouse, partner, kids or friends? The “magic sauce” has two elements: enjoyable and sustainable. What if there is no pressure to work out? You just do it because you like it. Maybe you really enjoy a yoga class at the gym or a walk in the park.
I had a client that struggled to find what movement fitted her, until we dived deep into childhood activities. Then jumping on a trampoline came up, and it really fit her need for being active. Contact me to see how we can get past your struggles with movement, let’s get you un-stuck!
